“Father sentenced to life for killing sons in Saint John tragedy”

The mother of two boys from Saint John, tragically stabbed to death by their father, expressed that no legal sentence can undo the loss of her beloved sons. Roman Kamyshnyy, the father, received a life imprisonment term without parole for 25 years following a jury’s conviction on two first-degree murder charges involving the boys, aged 10 and 17. The sentencing took place at the New Brunswick Court of King’s Bench.

In a statement released post-sentencing, Kamyshnyy’s ex-wife highlighted the irreplaceable void left by the loss of her children and the everlasting sorrow she will carry. Justice Darrell Stephenson emphasized that the prescribed sentence was automatic as per the Criminal Code, stating his judicial duty to adhere to legal constraints despite the gravity of the case.

The court condemned Kamyshnyy’s actions as heinous and vengeful, with the judge labeling his motive as purely driven by a desire for revenge. Witness A, the ex-wife, and her family were notably cited as the most affected by Kamyshnyy’s despicable act.

During the trial, evidence revealed that Kamyshnyy meticulously executed his plan to inflict the utmost harm on his children as a means of seeking retribution against his ex-wife. The tragic incident unfolded in the family’s residence, culminating in a violent struggle resulting in the boys’ untimely demise.

Crown prosecutor Elaina Campbell described the betrayal endured by the victims, particularly the teen who fought for his life against his own father. The impact of the murders reverberated through the community, leaving a lasting scar on the collective consciousness of Saint John.

Kamyshnyy, maintaining a lack of recollection of the events, expressed remorse and attempted to shift blame onto his ex-wife before the court intervened. The sentencing included stringent conditions, barring Kamyshnyy from any contact with certain individuals, possessing firearms, and imposing a victim fine surcharge.

Multiple victim impact statements were submitted to the court, painting a harrowing picture of the devastation caused by Kamyshnyy’s actions. The mother of the boys, through her legal representative, emphasized the need to remember her sons for their vibrant lives rather than the tragic circumstances of their deaths.

Witness A’s family members and community representatives detailed the profound and enduring trauma inflicted by Kamyshnyy’s heinous act, underscoring the irreparable loss and anguish experienced. The grieving process continues for the affected individuals as they seek solace and healing in the wake of this tragedy.
