“Family Mourns Teen’s Tragic River Wye Death”

The family of a teenager who tragically passed away after entering the River Wye during a Duke of Edinburgh excursion has shared heartfelt words in memory of their beloved son. Umar Dumbuya, hailing from London, lost his life on June 30 while participating in a DofE expedition in Glasbury, Powys.

Expressing their profound sorrow, the family, speaking through Dyfed-Powys Police, described Umar as a cherished individual who will be deeply missed by all who knew him. They highlighted his love for playing basketball, hitting the gym, and enjoying time with friends and family. Remembering Umar for his kindness, warmth, and sense of humor, they emphasized the immense void his passing has left in their lives and requested privacy as they mourn.

Following reports of Umar entering the water and not resurfacing, emergency services, including Dyfed-Powys Police, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service, and mountain rescue teams, launched a search operation leading to the recovery of Umar’s body from the River Wye in Glasbury.

A representative from Duke of Edinburgh expressed deep sadness over the tragic incident, offering condolences to Umar’s family and all involved in the expedition. Assuring full support, they mentioned working closely with relevant authorities to understand the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate event.
