The family of an American man who was manipulated into taking his own life during a video call has commended a British individual for uncovering the truth. Dylan Phelan, a 21-year-old from Morley, West Yorkshire, was part of an online group that pressured 21-year-old Travis Dyer to shoot himself in Louisiana in October 2024. Phelan confessed to promoting suicide, creating indecent images, and possessing extreme pornography, resulting in a sentence of six years and four months in prison.
Court proceedings revealed that before his suicide, Dyer had inscribed Phelan’s name on his body. On the fateful day, while on a video call with Phelan and two others named Mads and Rob, Phelan repeatedly urged Dyer to pull the trigger, eventually laughing when he did so.
Phelan retained a recording of the suicide on his computer and later disclosed the incident to a female acquaintance, who was appalled by the revelation. Subsequently, Phelan’s mother was informed, leading to Phelan confessing his involvement in Dyer’s death at Elland Road police station in Leeds in March.
Acknowledging the impact of the defendant’s actions, Travis Dyer’s family praised an English acquaintance who reached out to them, stating that despite the negative group dynamics that led to the tragedy, Dyer did have a genuine online friend in England. They emphasized that the digital world can serve as a positive space, contrasting with the darkness Phelan chose to engage in.
During the sentencing at Leeds Crown Court, Andrew Pettersen highlighted that Phelan joined an online community on Discord where discussions about mental health occurred but lacked supportive elements. Authorities discovered indecent images and extreme pornography on Phelan’s electronic devices.
Mr. Justice Cotter expressed that Phelan’s actions stemmed from morbid curiosity and highlighted the need for assistance for individuals like Dyer, who were struggling with mental health issues. Regarding Phelan’s lack of regard for Dyer’s life, the judge condemned his desire for control over another’s actions.
The court learned that Dyer had faced significant personal losses, including the deaths of his mother and sister in drowning incidents. Vivian Mahoney, Dyer’s great-grandmother, described him as a resilient individual who had endured immense tragedy but had a promising future ahead, which was cut short.
Mr. Justice Cotter characterized Dyer as a victim of systematic cruelty and manipulation that led to his suicide, emphasizing the role of Phelan and others in pressuring him to take his own life. Dyer’s family highlighted that Phelan was not acting alone and stressed the negative impact of group dynamics in turning the online environment into a harmful space.
The family paid tribute to Dyer, underscoring his resilience and potential, which was tragically lost. The judge urged anyone with relevant information to contact US authorities if they were aware of other individuals involved in the incident, particularly highlighting the danger posed by one individual who boasted about being a sociopath and participating in multiple suicides.
