A written apology from Robert Bush, the disgraced funeral director, has incited anger among the families affected by his actions. Bush, who was sentenced to 20 years in jail at Hull Crown Court, failed to properly bury or cremate individuals and mistakenly provided grieving families with the ashes of strangers, including an animal. Following a police raid on Legacy Independent Funeral Directors in Hull, approximately 35 bodies and over 100 sets of ashes were discovered, leading to Bush’s imprisonment.
One of the affected individuals, Jasmine Beverley, expressed her outrage at the apology letter, describing it as cold and condescending. She highlighted that the letter lacked a genuine apology for Bush’s actions and seemed insincere. Jasmine emphasized that the start of the letter was riddled with errors, further diminishing its credibility. She pointed out that the absence of acknowledgment for his wrongdoings was particularly distressing to the families.
In a statement to the victims, Bush admitted the distress and uncertainty caused by his actions and expressed deep remorse for the pain inflicted on the families. He accepted responsibility for his failures and regretted not acting differently sooner. Bush acknowledged the impact on the families’ confidence in him and the memories associated with their loved ones, expressing genuine regret for the consequences of his actions.
Bush pleaded guilty to 67 offenses, including preventing lawful burials and theft from charities, portraying his operation as chaotic and causing extreme emotional distress to the affected families. Jasmine Beverley recounted the emotional turmoil of discovering her stillborn son’s remains in unacceptable conditions at the funeral parlour, a memory that will haunt her forever. The families, including Karen Dry, found Bush’s letter devoid of genuine remorse and viewed it as self-serving.
Despite Bush’s attempt at reconciliation, the families remain deeply affected by his actions and demand accountability through a public inquiry. The letter, perceived as insincere and lacking remorse, has further fueled the families’ anguish and desire for justice.
