Ex-SNP leader Peter Murrell’s purchase of a £124,000 luxury motorhome has been spotlighted through released images. Murrell, who admitted to embezzling over £400,000 from party funds, was seen at the High Court in Edinburgh in handcuffs. Details presented by Advocate depute Alan Cameron KC outlined how Murrell utilized SNP funds to sustain a lavish lifestyle over a decade.
The Crown Office revealed photos of the motorhome, equipped with high-end Molton Brown toiletries, which was seized by police from Murrell’s mother’s residence with only four miles on the odometer. Described as a “van” in the invoice, it was exclusively associated with Murrell, undisclosed to other party members or staff.
During a search at Murrell’s house, a £3,000 robotic lawnmower was discovered. Additionally, it was disclosed that a significant amount of money, including over £42,000 spent on 383 non-party-related items from Amazon, was directed to personal addresses.
Murrell’s deceptive practices included falsifying records and generating fake invoices to mask his illicit activities. Noteworthy purchases listed in his plea included luxury watches, fountain pens, and extravagant household items. Moreover, he fabricated a fake invoice to purchase a Jaguar I-Pace and misappropriated funds for a Volkswagen Golf.
His guilty plea has led to increased scrutiny on Nicola Sturgeon, who denies any involvement in his crimes. Despite being investigated in the SNP’s financial probe, Sturgeon has been cleared of any charges.
Calls for an independent inquiry into the SNP’s financial affairs have emerged. Murrell, attired in a dark blue suit, remains in custody pending sentencing on June 23.
