During the drive to Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children, a 10-year-old boy expressed his anxiety to the police officers accompanying him, repeatedly inquiring about their proximity to the destination.
<p"Feeling sick to my stomach," he shared while lying in the back of the vehicle.
An audio recording of the boy’s interview with the police in September 1994, recounting the horrific incident where he was tied to a tree and sexually assaulted, was played for the jury on Monday at the trial of the accused perpetrator.
Richard Neil, the defendant, has denied the 17 charges against him related to the assault, along with two previous similar attacks on an eight-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl. The charges include kidnapping, sexual assault causing bodily harm, and administering a stupefying substance.
For three decades, the investigations into the three assaults in southern Ontario parks between 1992 and 1995 remained unsolved. Breakthroughs in DNA technology, including investigative genetic genealogy, eventually enabled the authorities to connect Neil to the three crime scenes, as explained by the prosecutor to the jury at the Ontario Superior Court of Justice in Brampton, Ont.

Neil was taken into custody in 2024.
The court learned that the former postal worker does not dispute the events involving the three children but claims not to be involved.
“He did a lot of rude things to me,” the 10-year-old victim disclosed to Peel Regional Police in 1994 regarding the unidentified assailant.
The victim, whose identity is protected by a publication ban, detailed encountering a stranger in Brampton’s Norton Place Park after school that day. They engaged in conversation, during which the man alleged losing his wallet containing $900.
The boy described walking around the park with the man and conversing on a bench until the situation escalated when the man accused the boy of theft, leading to the boy’s foot being tied to a tree to prevent escape.
On the recorded police tape, the boy narrated a series of disturbing acts perpetrated by the man in a secluded area of the park, including urination, oral sex, and anal penetration.
“It hurt,” the boy revealed to the authorities.
Following the assault, the boy fled the woods and emerged near a branch of the Royal Canadian Legion adjacent to the park.
