Denmark has reiterated its defense of Greenland, with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warning that her country will not hesitate to react if faced with threats from the United States. The Prime Minister’s statement comes as Copenhagen and Washington continue to collaborate on finding a feasible resolution concerning Greenland, a territory that President Trump has persistently argued should be under U.S. control for national security reasons.
During an interview with the Polish newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza, Prime Minister Frederiksen mentioned the establishment of a high-level working group to maintain ongoing discussions with the U.S. However, despite the ongoing talks, Denmark remains firm in its stance of preserving its sovereign borders without any intentions of compromise.
“I am not looking for a conflict with the United States, but we will respond if provoked,” she emphasized to Gazeta Wyborcza’s journalist Bartosz T WieliÅ„ski.
Following the threats from the U.S. regarding Greenland, the Danish PM stated that all European allies have expressed solidarity with Denmark and pledged to stand united in a similar scenario. Frederiksen emphasized that Greenland’s loyalty cannot be swayed by external influences, asserting that the island’s population should have the autonomy to determine its own future. Additionally, she highlighted NATO’s increased presence in the Arctic region in response to Trump’s statements about Greenland, aiming to quell any uncertainties surrounding the territory.
Her remarks follow a lighthearted social media moment for President Trump, who shared a meme on his Truth Social platform depicting himself overlooking Greenland, drawing comparisons to a deity or, as locals might see it, Godzilla. Trump’s persistent advocacy for Greenland to become a U.S. territory has been met with opposition from Greenland’s residents and Denmark as a whole.
