Dean Penney, the individual found guilty of first-degree murder in connection to the 2016 disappearance of his estranged spouse, Jennifer Hillier-Penney, is anticipated to receive a sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole for 25 years on Friday at a courtroom in Corner Brook. The sentencing hearing for Penney is scheduled for 10 a.m. at the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador. While the imposed sentence is mandatory, the hearing will provide an opportunity for Hillier-Penney’s family to present victim impact statements detailing the impact of the murder and disappearance on their lives.
Jennifer Hillier-Penney was last seen on November 30, 2016, vanishing from the residence she once shared with Penney and their two daughters. Despite Penney’s persistent claims of innocence during the trial, the jury observed recorded videos of him confessing, on two separate occasions, to undercover police officers posing as members of a criminal group in a Mr. Big sting operation.
Penney argued that he felt coerced by the organization over the span of more than four years. He testified that during the two interviews resulting in confessions, he merely told the simulated crime boss what he thought they wanted to hear. However, the jury ultimately rendered a guilty verdict after five days of deliberations.
Throughout the trial, the prosecution maintained that Penney’s actions were driven by jealousy following his wife’s departure. They asserted that the circumstances leading up to the killing indicated a premeditated and intentional act of murder against Hillier-Penney.
The trial, lasting eight weeks, featured compelling testimonies from undercover officers, notably one identified as Vic, who developed a close relationship with Penney over the course of the lengthy operation. Despite Vic’s hopes for proving Penney’s innocence, the latter disclosed to the fictitious crime boss details of the events leading to Hillier-Penney’s demise.
In his admissions, Penney described how he caused Hillier-Penney to fall down the stairs in the garage, resulting in a fatal injury. Subsequently, he confessed to bludgeoning her while she lay unconscious on the floor. Penney then claimed to have disposed of the body by wrapping it and discarding it in the ocean near his cabin, where searches have failed to yield any discoveries.
