“Crypto King Accused of Misusing $36.3M Investor Funds”

Self-proclaimed “Crypto King” Aiden Pleterski reportedly utilized a substantial portion of the $36.3 million entrusted to him by investors for personal expenses and distributed a similar amount as returns from 2020 to 2022. During his trial at Toronto’s Superior Court, a senior forensic accountant, Albert Ciorma from the Ontario Securities Commission (OSC), disclosed that none of the investor funds received by Pleterski were channeled to FXChoice, the designated trading platform specified in their agreements. Only a fraction, approximately $113,000, was transferred to other foreign exchange and cryptocurrency platforms.

Ciorma’s investigation revealed that Pleterski allocated around $5.6 million for luxury vehicles, $4.9 million for credit card payments, $870,000 for travel and private jets, $598,000 for security measures, and provided nearly $3.7 million to his parents. Additionally, he withdrew $609,000 in cash advances from a credit card, totaling over $16.3 million in expenses. Pleterski also disbursed $16.1 million to investors out of the received funds, according to Ciorma’s findings.

Facing charges of fraud over $5,000 and money laundering, the 27-year-old Pleterski was indicted in May 2024 following an extensive investigation by the OSC and Durham Regional Police. Throughout the ongoing jury trial, the prosecution has contended that Pleterski guaranteed investment returns but failed to actually invest the funds, redirecting the money for personal use. Ciorma’s testimony provided crucial evidence supporting this assertion.

Numerous investors testified to collectively giving Pleterski more than $6 million, sharing similar experiences of entrusting him with funds for trading in foreign exchange and cryptocurrency, promising weekly returns ranging from two to 10 percent. Despite periodic updates from Pleterski on these purported gains, most investors reported never receiving any returns.

The Crown prosecutor, Scott Patterson, presented detailed records compiled by Ciorma, outlining the flow of funds in and out of Pleterski’s bank accounts. The documents illustrated incoming investor funds being swiftly expended on credit card bills, luxury purchases like cars, accommodations, designer goods, and other lavish expenses. Noteworthy expenditures included over $84,000 for a luxury property rental in Miami and $95,200 to the Toronto Blue Jays baseball team.

Testimonies from investors included accounts of viewing a video displaying Pleterski’s FXChoice account with a balance of $311 million in spring 2022. Mitchell Learning, one of the investors, accessed Pleterski’s email account subsequently and uncovered an email indicating the closure of the FXChoice account. Learning testified that Pleterski admitted to misappropriating investor funds and using new investments to fulfill payouts.

Pleterski’s trial is scheduled to resume with further testimony from the forensic accountant.
