A former inmate has issued a caution that the perpetrator of the tragic death of young Preston Davey will face severe consequences in prison due to being deemed the most undesirable type of prisoner.
Jamie Varley, a 37-year-old individual, was recently convicted of the murder and sexual abuse of the 13-month-old child he had adopted with his partner, 32-year-old John McGowan-Fazakerley. Varley, who worked as a high school teacher, displayed shock and distress upon hearing the guilty verdicts at Preston Crown Court, ultimately collapsing in reaction.
Preston passed away at Blackpool Victoria Hospital in July 2023 after enduring a total of 40 external and internal traumatic injuries during the four months he spent under the couple’s care in Blackpool.
In addition to the murder charge, Varley was found guilty of multiple offenses, including assault, cruelty to a child, grievous bodily harm, and various sexual offenses involving children. McGowan-Fazakerley was also convicted for his involvement in allowing the child’s death and committing acts of cruelty and sexual assault against a child.
Scheduled for sentencing by Mr. Justice Turner on Thursday, both defendants are expected to face severe repercussions in prison, according to insights shared by a former British Army veteran and ex-convict, Rich Jones. Jones emphasized the high-risk status Varley would hold in prison due to the nature of his crimes, comparing him to notorious offenders like Ian Watkins.
Jones suggested that Varley could be placed in a high-security Category A prison, such as HMP Wakefield, known as “Monster Mansion” due to its housing of dangerous criminals. Despite potential placement in a vulnerable prisoner wing, Jones stressed that Varley would still face significant threats from other inmates due to the severity of his offenses.
Regarding the verdict, Karen Tonge from the Crown Prosecution Service described the case as one of the most shocking and appalling she had encountered, underscoring the violation of trust and responsibility Varley and McGowan-Fazakerley had toward baby Preston. Tonge expressed sympathy for the innocent child and those affected by the tragic events, emphasizing the emotional toll of the situation.
