More than 200 individuals have submitted reports to health authorities, expressing concerns that deaths might be linked to the components found in weight loss injections such as Wegovy and Mounjaro, based on newly released data.
The Medicine and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) Yellow Card Scheme data reveals that over 200 cases of reported deaths potentially related to these drugs, with an additional 150,000 reports of adverse reactions. These reports encompass various brands and detail issues like gastrointestinal complications experienced during usage.
Public reports of deaths specifically highlight the active ingredients in popular injections and diabetes medications like Ozempic. Data from MHRA shows 106,189 adverse reactions, including gastrointestinal issues, and 120 deaths associated with tirzepatide, marketed as Mounjaro. Additionally, individuals reported 48,089 reactions and 59 suspected deaths related to semaglutide, the key component in the weight-loss medication Wegovy.
Semaglutide is also utilized in diabetes treatments like Ozempic and Rybelsus. Concerning liraglutide, sold under the brand name Saxenda, there were 4,491 adverse reactions and 37 deaths reported as potentially linked.
MHRA emphasized that reports of adverse reactions through the Yellow Card Scheme do not confirm causation but indicate suspicions by the reporters. The agency highlighted the constant review of GLP-1 receptor agonists’ safety, noting that benefits generally outweigh risks when used as prescribed.
Health Secretary Yvette Cooper affirmed the robust regulatory system in place to record and analyze adverse reactions to weight loss medications. Three types of weight-loss injections are currently available through the NHS in the UK, with Wegovy being the most popular choice. Researchers estimated a significant number of individuals in Great Britain using or considering weight loss drugs, surpassing initial NHS prescribing goals.
Common side effects of weight loss drugs, as noted by NHS inform, can include digestive issues, headaches, fatigue, and low blood sugar. It is essential to monitor and gather detailed data on the use of these medications to ensure safe and appropriate usage.
