“Concerns Mount Over Principal’s Exit at Labrador School”

A mother of a student at Peacock Primary School in Happy Valley-Goose Bay expressed concern over the recent resignation of the school’s principal due to staffing issues. Bailey Rose, an early childhood educator, emphasized the need for improved support for children in Labrador, criticizing the Department of Education for not allocating enough resources despite the region’s abundance of available funds.

Ashley Barrett, the former principal, stepped down citing critical understaffing, which impacted her ability to ensure students’ safety and educational quality. Currently, the school has six out of its 27 teaching positions unfilled.

Rose highlighted the personal attention and support Barrett provided to her son, who has ADHD, indicating the principal’s dedication to her students. Education Minister Paul Dinn acknowledged the existing educational gaps in Labrador and pledged to address the staffing challenges by providing temporary staff and engaging with relevant stakeholders.

NDP Leader Jim Dinn stressed that the recruitment and retention of teachers in Labrador have been persistent issues and expressed disappointment over the circumstances leading to Barrett’s resignation. Rose urged the government to prioritize education and address social factors influencing teacher recruitment in the region.

Minister Dinn plans to visit schools in Labrador to assess the situation firsthand and work towards sustainable solutions. The community calls for increased investment in education and essential services for the betterment of children’s futures in Labrador.
