Canadian short track speed skater Will Dandjinou is taking a unique approach to his Olympic journey, aiming for a fresh outcome on the grand stage of the upcoming Games. Embracing boldness and uncertainty, Dandjinou is making a notable shift from short track to long track, albeit temporarily.
Following his decision to skip the initial two World Tour stops in Vancouver and Montreal, the back-to-back Crystal Globe champion revealed his plan to participate in the Canadian long track championships from October 15 to 18 in Quebec City. Expressing enthusiasm for this new challenge, Dandjinou emphasized the potential benefits of exploring both speed skating disciplines.
While focusing on the long track nationals, where he intends to compete in the 1,500-meter event and possibly the mass start, Dandjinou remains committed to short track, eyeing his debut on the World Tour in Seoul. Reflecting on his performance at the previous Olympics, where he fell short of expectations, Dandjinou is determined to alter his trajectory for the upcoming Games by venturing into long track racing at the outset of this Olympic cycle.
Clarifying that his current exploration is not a permanent career shift but an opportunity for growth and skill transfer between disciplines, Dandjinou acknowledged the potential for a future transition depending on his progress. Drawing inspiration from Canadian teammate Valérie Maltais, who successfully transitioned from short track to long track with notable achievements, Dandjinou is open to the possibilities that lie ahead.
Despite uncertainties about the future, Dandjinou remains focused on improving in short track while embracing the learning experiences offered by long track competition. Supported by his coach Marc Gagnon, Dandjinou’s foray into long track is viewed as a positive step towards broadening his skills and extending his athletic career. Gagnon envisions the potential for Dandjinou to pursue long track more extensively in the future, acknowledging the unique challenges and rewards it offers.
As Dandjinou embarks on this new chapter in his speed skating journey, he anticipates a shift in scenery and a resetting of his career trajectory. While his long-term aspirations include Olympic glory in short track, Dandjinou remains open to the possibilities that lie ahead and is committed to doing whatever it takes to achieve his ultimate goal.
