“Canadian Short Track Speed Skaters Primed for Greater Success”

Charles Hamelin, a renowned short track speed skater from Canada, believes that the new generation of athletes following in his footsteps are well-positioned to achieve even greater success. According to the six-time Olympic medalist, what distinguishes the upcoming crop of speed skaters in Canada is their high level of intelligence.

Hamelin noted that while he focused on sheer speed during his career, today’s skaters demonstrate a strategic and adaptable approach to racing, emphasizing intelligence and versatility as key factors in achieving victory on the ice. Having recently secured his fourth Olympic gold medal in the men’s 5,000-meter relay at the 2022 Beijing Games, Hamelin has transitioned to coaching young talents in Montreal.

Impressed by the current speed skaters’ performance, Hamelin remarked that they surpass his own abilities in terms of speed and endurance. Canada’s success in short track speed skating was evident at the 2026 Milan-Cortina Olympics, where the country clinched five medals in the discipline.

Courtney Sarault of Moncton, N.B., shined by winning silver in the women’s 1,000m, bronze in the 500m, bronze in the women’s 3,000m relay, and silver in the mixed team relay. Meanwhile, Steven Dubois from Lachenaie, Que., secured gold in the men’s 500m event. Both Sarault and William Dandjinou of Montreal were honored with the Crystal Globe as the top female and male speed skaters of the season on the World Cup circuit.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the current Canadian team’s potential, Hamelin looks forward to witnessing their success on the international stage. Fans will have the opportunity to watch Sarault and Dubois compete live during the upcoming ISU Short Track World Tour, with events scheduled in Vancouver and Montreal.

Vancouver holds a special place in Hamelin’s heart, as it was where he achieved two of his Olympic gold medals. He recalled the electrifying atmosphere and overwhelming support from the crowd during the 2010 Winter Olympics. As the Short Track World Tour returns to Vancouver’s Pacific Coliseum after more than a decade, Hamelin anticipates a warm reception from the city’s passionate fans, affirming the enduring connection between speed skating and the community.
