Canada’s women’s wheelchair basketball squad extended their unbeaten streak to 3-0 in the opening phase of the world championships in Ottawa after clinching a hard-fought 66-62 victory against China at TD Place on Saturday. Kady Dandeneau, a seasoned player hailing from Pender Island, B.C., showcased an outstanding performance with 37 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists. Additionally, Arinn Young from St. Albert, Alta., contributed significantly with a triple-double, scoring 19 points and securing 10 rebounds and 10 assists, aiding Canada in securing the Group A victory.
The game was evenly poised at halftime with both teams tied at 30-30, and it remained a close contest throughout. Canada entered the final quarter with a narrow 47-46 lead, courtesy of a crucial three-pointer from Dandeneau. In the closing moments of the game, Dandeneau sealed Canada’s win by converting a free throw after being fouled while scoring.
Leading China’s charge, Lin Suiling tallied 19 points and 12 assists, with Zhang Xuemei chipping in 18 points and 13 rebounds. Canada displayed sharp shooting, registering a 51% field goal percentage (25/47) and a 30% success rate from beyond the three-point line (3/10).
In upcoming matches, the Canadian women’s team is set to clash against Brazil on Sunday at 2:45 p.m. ET at TD Place, followed by a faceoff against Great Britain at Carleton University on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. ET to conclude their preliminary-round fixtures. The United States and reigning Paralympic champions Netherlands also boast unblemished records of 3-0 in Group B.
The women’s team commenced their world championship campaign on a high note, securing a 76-51 victory against Spain on Wednesday before overpowering Australia 79-30 on Thursday. Meanwhile, the Canadian men’s team stands at a solid 2-1 record in Ottawa.
