Canada Post has initiated weekend parcel deliveries in Ottawa and Montreal, with Toronto set to follow suit in late November. The Crown Corporation plans to extend weekend delivery services to additional urban areas such as Vancouver, Edmonton, and Calgary next year. By the end of 2027, the goal is to provide weekend delivery to seven million households.
While private carriers have long offered weekend and evening delivery options, Canada Post had been limited by its previous collective agreement with mail carriers. The company, which reported a loss of $482 million in the first half of 2026, anticipates the need for federal loans to sustain its operations.
During the annual public meeting, Canada Post’s senior leadership shared updates on the organization’s financial situation and restructuring efforts. Chief Financial Officer Rindala El-Hage emphasized the company’s commitment to reducing reliance on government funding in the long term.
Despite ongoing financial challenges, Canada Post is seeing early signs of recovery, with a notable 20.7% increase in parcel revenue in the second quarter of 2026 compared to the previous year. Operating costs have also decreased by $119 million. The recent agreement between the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) and Canada Post, valid until 2030, marks a significant milestone in their relationship.
