“Canada Launches $2B Rebate Program for Home Heat Pumps”

The Canadian government is introducing a $2-billion rebate initiative to assist homeowners in cutting down on their yearly heating expenses and decreasing emissions by installing heat pumps in their residences. The program aims to offer rebates to around 820,000 homeowners over the next eight years, resulting in an average annual savings of $1,400 on heating bills for those who replace existing heat pumps or heating systems. According to officials who spoke on background, homeowners can swiftly apply for the rebate when their current heating system malfunctions and they opt to upgrade to a new heat pump system. They can also apply when their current heating system nears the end of its lifespan and they wish to switch before it breaks down.

Additionally, the government plans to collaborate with the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) to offer low-interest financing to owners of apartment buildings for retrofitting more than 280,000 homes over the next eight years. Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized the significance of the initiative, stating, “Today, we are assisting an additional one million Canadian households in implementing energy-efficient retrofits. We are cutting costs, reducing emissions, and fostering a more robust and sustainable economy for all.”
