Finance Canada has decided to exclude fish and seafood products from the list of items subject to counter-tariffs, following feedback from various industries. This adjustment was announced late Wednesday night, with a focus on evaluating the impact on sectors affected by U.S. tariffs.
The change in policy came after the government imposed counter-tariffs on $27.6 billion worth of U.S. goods in response to new 50 per cent tariffs imposed by the U.S. over the weekend. The initial list of affected goods included many seafood products taxed at a 25 per cent rate.
The government emphasized its commitment to maintaining a proportional response to U.S. tariffs without providing specific details. Concerns were raised within the fisheries industry earlier in the week regarding the potential effects of retaliatory measures, with some feeling caught off guard by the inclusion of seafood in the tariffs list.
