“Brothers on Trial for Fatal Car Crash”

Two siblings are on trial for their alleged involvement in a fatal car crash that resulted in the death of a father and serious injuries to his nine-year-old son. The court heard that Abubakr Yusaf, 31, a locum optometrist, and Umar Yusaf, 35, from Esmond Road, Manchester, are accused of causing the death of Rhys Jenkins, 41, a rugby referee from Deuddw, Powys, through dangerous driving on the A483 in November 2024.

The brothers also face charges of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, with Abubakr additionally denying driving without insurance. According to the prosecution at Mold Crown Court, the siblings were driving a BMW and Audi on the A483 when the tragic incident occurred between 6pm and 6:30pm on November 16, 2024.

Prosecutor David Mainstone claimed that Abubakr’s excessive speed and reckless overtaking led to the loss of control of the BMW, causing it to veer into oncoming traffic where it collided with Mr. Jenkins’ vehicle. Witnesses testified to the dangerous driving behavior of the brothers, with one witness describing the incident as reckless and inevitable given the high speed on the road.

Following the crash, the brothers allegedly fled the scene, leaving the wrecked BMW behind. The court was informed that the BMW’s data indicated it was traveling at over 63mph at the time of impact, resulting in the fatal collision with Mr. Jenkins’ Toyota.

Mr. Jenkins tragically lost his life at the scene, while his son, Ioan, was airlifted to Alder Hey children’s hospital in Liverpool for treatment. The trial is ongoing as the court continues to hear evidence surrounding the events leading up to the fatal crash.
