British Trio Admit Killing Canadian Restaurateur

Three British men have admitted to the killing of a restaurant owner in Canada after an alleged dispute over an unpaid bill. Sharif Rahman, a 44-year-old father, lost his life following a physical altercation with a British family in Owen Sound, situated approximately 190km northwest of Toronto. Robert Evans Jr, 25, pleaded guilty to manslaughter, while his father, Robert Busby Evans, 49, and uncle, Barry Evans, 56, admitted to being accessories to the crime.

Rahman, who owned The Curry House restaurant, passed away a week after a confrontation with three men regarding an outstanding bill on August 17, 2023. The incident unfolded outside his establishment, where a disagreement ensued over a £79 ($150) meal charge. Evans Jr allegedly struck Rahman in the face, causing him to fall to the ground and sustain a fatal head injury, as reported by CBC.

Upon discovery by a staff member, Rahman was found with a skull fracture and brain hemorrhage. Despite being kept on life support for a week, he tragically succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.

The British duo, Robert Busby Evans and Barry Evans, received a sentence of time served plus one day, with their transfer to Canadian authorities for repatriation back to the UK taking place yesterday. Justice Christopher Chorney, as per Global News, emphasized the severity of their actions in aiding their relative’s escape from the country, indicating their awareness of the gravity of the offense despite Rahman’s subsequent death.

The judge underscored the importance of closure for the community and the victim’s family, avoiding prolonged legal proceedings. While Evans Jr awaits sentencing, a recommendation for a three-and-a-half-year term has been proposed by defense counsel and officials, with the judge expected to deliver a verdict on July 10.

Hailing from Manchester, the men were reportedly in Canada on tourist visas at the time of the incident, returning to the UK shortly after the tragic event. Following their arrest in Edinburgh and Dalkeith by Scottish authorities, they were extradited to Canada for trial last year, having willingly consented to the legal process, per the BBC.
