British Couple’s Spy Conviction Appeal Rejected

A British couple, Craig and Lindsay Foreman, who were sentenced to 10 years in an Iranian prison on spying charges, have had their appeal against the convictions rejected. The Foremans, arrested in January 2025 during a motorcycle trip around the world, were initially jailed for espionage, a claim they dispute. Their family expressed frustration at not being allowed to attend the appeal hearing, with Lindsay’s son, Joe Bennett, highlighting their lack of understanding of the legal proceedings.

Bennett stated that his mother and stepfather were not present at their appeal hearing and were not provided with a clear account of the defense arguments made on their behalf. He also mentioned that the couple had been asked to sign unreadable documents, which they refused. The case has now been forwarded to the Supreme Court, but the family is uncertain about the process and timeline moving forward.

According to reports from the Associated Press, the Foremans, from East Sussex, are in a critical condition due to hunger strikes, with Mr. Foreman on day 25 and Mrs. Foreman on day 16. Their communication has been severed by Iranian authorities. Bennett, after meeting with Foreign Office officials, expressed his disappointment at the lack of transparency regarding the pressure being exerted on Tehran.

He emphasized that the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) had shown kindness but stressed the urgency for tangible actions to secure the couple’s release. The Foreign Office has cautioned British and British-Iranian nationals against traveling to Iran due to the high risk of arrest, interrogation, or detention. The British Government has condemned the couple’s sentence as “completely appalling and totally unjustifiable.”
