“British and French Forces Seize Suspected Russian Tanker”

British forces, alongside French commandos, participated in the seizure of a suspected Russian tanker violating sanctions. The operation, led by French navy specialists on the Atlantic Ocean vessel The Tagor, was supported by a helicopter launched from the Royal Navy’s HMS Somerset. The joint effort, confirmed by French President Emmanuel Macron, aimed to disrupt the Kremlin’s financial resources used to procure weapons for the conflict in Ukraine.

This event marks a series of actions by Western nations targeting Moscow’s “shadow fleet,” a network of tankers utilized to circumvent sanctions imposed on Russia following its invasion of Ukraine. Macron emphasized the importance of upholding international laws and preventing vessels from supporting Russia’s military activities.

Both the UK and France have committed to preventing Russian-flagged ships from passing through their waters. Earlier this year, the UK assisted in capturing the Marinera, a Russian-linked tanker, and the Grinch, a Russian oil tanker, in collaboration with the US and France, respectively. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov criticized these actions as illegal and bordering on piracy, while a UK Ministry of Defence spokesperson emphasized the collective effort to disrupt the financial backing for Russia’s actions in Ukraine.

Since Russia’s invasion in February 2022, the conflict in Ukraine has persisted, prompting severe international sanctions. Despite these measures, Russia has continued to evade sanctions through various means, including its shadow fleet and smuggling operations.
