A tragic incident occurred at Luz do Bras day care center in São Paulo, Brazil, where a one-year-old boy named Abdoulaye Dieng lost his life after his head got stuck behind a mirror. The child was playing in the day care’s playroom when his head became wedged between a metal safety bar and the mirror, causing him to asphyxiate.
Reports indicate that Abdoulaye struggled for approximately six minutes before nursery staff returned and noticed the situation. They promptly freed him and sought help from the military police. Despite being rushed to the Mooca Emergency Care Unit, the toddler was pronounced dead upon arrival. His father had dropped him off just two hours earlier.
Following the incident, the family was misled by day care staff who claimed Abdoulaye had fallen ill and was being taken to the hospital. In reality, the child had already passed away. The family’s lawyer revealed that the parents were under the impression that their son was receiving medical attention.
Allegations arose that the children at the day care were left unsupervised as staff reportedly attended the director’s birthday celebration. Authorities are investigating the case, considering potential manslaughter charges. Five employees, including the director, a coordinator, a teacher, a pedagogue, and another staff member, were questioned by Civil Police officers.
Abdoulaye’s funeral took place on July 24, where his grieving father expressed deep sorrow over the loss. The family, originally from Senegal and residing in Brazil for eight years, faces immense heartbreak and struggles to come to terms with the tragedy. The community mourns the loss of the young child as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
