“Beware Abroad: UK Government Warns of Methanol Poisoning”

The Government has issued a fresh caution about methanol poisoning for travelers visiting nearly 30 countries. As thousands of British tourists prepare to journey abroad this summer, officials have collaborated with survivors and families affected by the issue to launch the “Know the Signs” initiative. The campaign advises travelers to be aware of the risks of methanol poisoning and take precautions while overseas.

This initiative coincides with the Government updating its travel guidance for 29 destinations, emphasizing the importance of being cautious with alcohol-based beverages, especially those served as shots, cocktails, or in open containers like buckets and jugs. Travelers are encouraged to opt for sealed drinks whenever feasible, such as branded beers, ciders, wines, and pre-mixed cocktails. It is also recommended to avoid homemade or street-sold alcohol and instead purchase drinks from reputable establishments like bars, restaurants, hotels, and licensed venues.

Consular Minister Hamish Falconer MP stated, “Nobody anticipates a holiday ending tragically due to methanol poisoning, which can have severe – and sometimes deadly – consequences. The bravery of survivors and affected families in sharing their stories will help raise awareness and potentially save lives.”

He added, “Before embarking on your trip, review the most up-to-date travel advice for your chosen destination and take prompt action if something seems amiss. When consuming spirits abroad, choose reputable venues, buy sealed drinks, and steer clear of homemade alcohol or free drink offers.”

Methanol is a hazardous form of industrial alcohol that can taint counterfeit, illicitly produced, or contaminated alcoholic beverages. Even a small amount, approximately equivalent to a single shot, can be deadly, while even smaller quantities can result in severe and permanent consequences, such as vision impairment.

Among the advocates of the campaign is Margaret McKie, whose daughter Kirsty tragically passed away after consuming tainted alcohol in Bali in July 2022. Kirsty, 38, was careful to purchase alcohol only from trustworthy suppliers, according to her family.

Margaret recounted, “Kirsty, like many others affected by methanol poisoning, initially thought it was just a hangover and planned to rest it off. However, with methanol poisoning, the situation deteriorates.”

She warned, “If you notice a friend exhibiting unusually severe drunkenness, vision issues, or breathing difficulties, it is crucial to get them to a hospital promptly. Your swift action could save a life.”

Calum MacDonald, a survivor of methanol poisoning in Laos in 2024, also endorsed the campaign. Within two days of consuming a drink at a bar, he experienced vision impairment described as “a blinding kaleidoscopic light,” which became permanent. MacDonald expressed that had he been aware of the warning signs, his circumstances might have been different today.

He emphasized, “Having the necessary information and being able to identify high-risk situations and symptoms can help mitigate risks and ensure your well-being and that of your companions.”

Hannah-Mei Grisley, whose friend Simone White, 28, passed away after ingesting methanol-contaminated alcohol in Laos, supports the campaign. She stressed the importance of recognizing the signs of methanol poisoning, seeking immediate medical assistance, and reducing risks associated with alcohol consumption while abroad.

Early indicators of methanol poisoning include vomiting, impaired judgment, lack of balance, and drowsiness. Between 12-48 hours post-drinking, symptoms may progress to abdominal pain, dizziness, rapid breathing, breathlessness, blurred vision or blindness, coma, and convulsions. Vision-related issues, such as blurry vision, sensitivity to bright lights, and potential complete blindness, are significant warning signs. If experiencing any of these symptoms, seeking urgent medical help is crucial.
