German police have fatally shot a man believed to be the perpetrator of driving a van into a crowd near Berlin’s Pride festival, resulting in the death of a woman and injuries to at least 29 individuals.
The suspected terrorist, Abdul Ballout, aged 21, confronted the police with a weapon before being shot by law enforcement officers. Ballout was located in an allotment garden in Spandau, West Berlin.
Authorities had previously issued a wanted notice cautioning the public against approaching Ballout, a German citizen of Lebanese descent, due to potential armed and dangerous behavior.
Polizei Berlin confirmed that the suspect from the previous day’s attack in the Grosser Tiergarten was found in Spandau at around 6 pm. Following his rush toward the emergency forces with a stabbing weapon, the police used firearms, resulting in his death despite resuscitation attempts at the scene.
Witnesses reported hearing two rounds of gunfire during the operation at the garden shed. Berlin’s interior senator Iris Spranger expressed gratitude to the police for swiftly apprehending the attacker.
Interior minister Alexander Dobrindt disclosed that the suspect had been known to authorities in the past for various offenses, radicalization, and association with the Islamist community in Berlin, indicating a potential Islamic terror motive.
The incident occurred around 10 pm on Saturday, close to a party near the Brandenburg Gate marking the end of the city’s Pride festival. A white van drove into the Tiergarten Park, striking multiple people in a crowd consisting of festival attendees and visitors before crashing into a tree.
Ashley Jump, a 26-year-old Briton who attended the parade on Saturday but left before the attack, returned the next day to lay flowers at a memorial, emphasizing resilience and unity in the face of adversity.
