Apu Nahasapeemapetilon made a comeback on the latest episode of “The Simpsons,” titled “Treehouse of Horror Presents: The Revengening,” marking his first speaking appearance since 2017. Despite making silent background appearances, the character had faced criticism for perpetuating racial stereotypes.
Sunil Malhotra, an Indian-American actor known for his work in “The Legend of Korra,” now lends his voice to Apu, taking over from Hank Azaria, a white actor who had voiced the character for 27 years. Azaria publicly expressed regret in 2021 for his involvement in creating and portraying Apu, acknowledging the harm caused by the character’s portrayal.
The character’s return was a surprise reveal, with the episode showcasing Apu as a mysterious figure before declaring, “I am Apu.” This development aligns with the show’s commitment, announced in June 2020, to have characters of color voiced by actors from the same background. To this end, other roles, like Carl Carlson and Dr. Julius Hibbert, have already undergone recasting.
The decision to bring back Apu was kept confidential until the episode aired, generating mixed reactions from fans online. While some welcomed the character’s return, others expressed reservations, questioning the show’s relevance and reminiscing about Azaria’s portrayal. The show’s executive producer, Matt Selman, emphasized a desire to evolve the character in a manner befitting the show’s style.
In an Instagram post, Malhotra shared his excitement about bringing Apu back, describing it as a “reclamation” and a “homecoming.” The character’s revival signifies a shift in casting practices within the show and signals a commitment to addressing past controversies.
