Alex Ovechkin recently expressed his stance on peace and love following his appearance in an advertisement for the United Russia party, which is associated with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The video featuring Ovechkin alongside Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and former Soviet hockey star Viacheslav Fetisov surfaced just before the Washington Capitals’ media day.
Speaking from Arlington, Va., Ovechkin emphasized his support for his country and his belief in peace and love worldwide. He clarified that his decision to participate in the ad was straightforward as he was asked and agreed without hesitation. This is not the first time Ovechkin has shown support for Putin, as he previously endorsed the Russian president by joining the “Putin Team” in 2017.
In response to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine earlier in 2022, Ovechkin made a plea for peace, distancing himself from politics and asserting his identity as an athlete. With Russia’s parliamentary election featuring parties aligned with Putin’s policies, Ovechkin, who recently turned 41, reaffirmed his intention to reside in Russia post-NHL retirement while maintaining a strong attachment to Washington, D.C.
Despite previous speculations about his retirement, Ovechkin remains committed to the Capitals for the ongoing season and is focused on his performance in training camp without divulging specific plans beyond the current season.
