In his quest for an Acadian flag emoji to enhance a social media post promoting his band on National Acadian Day, Alexis Belliveau discovered the absence of such an emoji. Emojis, symbolic icons commonly utilized in text messages and emails to convey emotions, concepts, and objects, encompass a vast array, including numerous flag representations.
Hailing from Moncton, N.B., Belliveau and his comrade Julien Robichaud are currently preparing a proposal for an Acadian flag emoji creation to be submitted to Unicode, a California-based non-profit organization responsible for reviewing and endorsing emoji proposals.
Expressing the significance of the Acadian flag, Belliveau emphasized the desire for digital means to manifest Acadian pride through an emoji. He added that introducing this emoji could engage younger generations in Acadian heritage.
To bolster their submission, Belliveau and Robichaud initiated an online campaign featuring a website detailing Acadian history, flag symbolism, and a petition with over 10,000 signatures. Belliveau highlighted the significance of community support in reinforcing the proposal’s viability.
Despite the absence of an official Acadian flag emoji, Belliveau noted that individuals have resorted to utilizing emoji sequences to exhibit Acadian pride. Notable sequences include combinations like 🔵⭐⚪🔴 and 💙⭐🤍❤️.
Addressing potential challenges, Belliveau acknowledged Unicode’s criteria for approving emojis, emphasizing the need for uniqueness, global relevance, versatility, and contextual applicability. He identified a potential workaround within existing emoji combinations to align with Unicode’s guidelines.
Belliveau is actively disseminating information to Acadians worldwide and intends to finalize and submit the proposal in the upcoming winter season. His outreach efforts extend to Acadian communities in various regions, including Louisiana, France, Quebec, and throughout Canada, recognizing the widespread presence of Acadian heritage globally.
