Police have initiated an inquiry following the tragic death of a woman in an incident on the M6 near Wigan. The motorway was shut down for several hours earlier today when officers responded to a welfare concern at the Downall Green Road bridge over the southbound stretch in the morning. Emergency services arrived at the scene, but the woman was declared deceased on-site.
Formal identification of the woman is pending, as stated by Greater Manchester Police. There are no suspected foul play circumstances surrounding her death. The M6 was reopened around 4 pm following the extended closure.
An investigation by the police has been launched, urging anyone who may have witnessed or been involved in the incident, occurring just before 8 am, to come forward. This includes individuals who saw the incident, may have had a collision in the vicinity, or possess dashcam/CCTV footage of the event.
The Serious Collision Investigation Unit is now appealing for anyone with additional information on the fatal collision to step forward.
