Canadian-Born Man Faces Charges of Illegal Voting

Robert Harold Corbett, a Canadian-born individual raised in the United States, was recently confronted by federal agents at his residence in Raleigh, N.C., who presented an arrest warrant alleging he falsely claimed U.S. citizenship to vote. Corbett, who disclosed that he only learned about his adoption at the age of 51, faces charges for voting by an alien and falsely claiming citizenship for voting in six elections since 1998, according to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ).

Corbett is among 11 Canadians entangled in a crackdown on non-citizen voting initiated by President Donald Trump’s administration leading up to the Nov. 3 midterm elections. The U.S. Embassy in Ottawa has directly linked these prosecutions to what it perceives as Canadian interference in U.S. political affairs, accusing Canadian politicians of trying to influence American elections through trade policies, political campaigns, and public statements. The embassy cautioned against any Canadian involvement in U.S. elections, emphasizing American sovereignty in electoral processes amid escalated U.S.-Canada trade disputes.

Federal prosecutors have brought charges against numerous non-citizens, including long-time U.S. permanent residents, for illegally voting in federal elections since late last year. David Becker from the Center for Election Innovation and Research mentioned that such cases are infrequent, hinting that the recent arrests might be an attempt to cast doubt on the upcoming elections out of fear of potential voter rejection.

Concerns have been raised regarding errors in voter registration systems, leading to misunderstandings among non-citizens facing voting-related allegations. The consequences of these accusations can be severe, with the Trump administration aiming to deport non-citizens convicted of illegal voting. While some have successfully challenged their charges, the climate surrounding these prosecutions is causing unease and fear among immigrants and non-citizens in the U.S., according to political experts.

Trump’s claims of widespread voter fraud, coupled with the recent arrests, are viewed as political tactics to rally his supporters. Becker and other experts believe that the current administration is aggressively pursuing these cases to counter allegations of widespread non-citizen voting, rather than targeting Canadians specifically.
