NFL Open to Probe of Eagles’ Handling of Hurts’ Blood Clots

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced on Wednesday that the league is open to an investigation into how the Philadelphia Eagles managed Jalen Hurts’ blood clots, following a request from the players’ union. Goodell stated during a press conference at the conclusion of the NFL’s annual fall meeting that Dr. Allen Sills, the league’s chief medical officer, has reviewed the procedures followed and acknowledged the union’s right to request a review.

Goodell emphasized that there was a thorough medical evaluation and praised the adherence to protocols. He expressed confidence in the process, noting that the chief medical officer had confirmed the proper implementation of protocols.

Dr. Sills passionately defended the Eagles’ medical staff on Tuesday, with NFL officials maintaining communication with the team’s doctors and trainers, as well as the Cleveland Clinic in London.

Executive Vice President Jeff Miller stated that there was a clear understanding of the sequence of events. He refuted claims that Hurts was awake for over 30 hours before playing against Jacksonville on October 11, clarifying that the quarterback had returned to the hotel and slept for approximately seven to eight hours.

Hurts, currently on injured reserve, is expected to sit out the remainder of the season due to a blood clot in his left calf that migrated to his lungs. The Eagles and agent Nicole Lynn disclosed that Hurts is dealing with deep vein thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary embolisms.

Goodell played down the impact of international travel on the situation, emphasizing the priority of Hurts’ health and future well-being. He expressed concern for the young player’s health and reiterated that protocols were diligently followed.
