Labrador Aviator Tony Powell Mourned by Family

Long-time Labrador aviator Tony Powell is being fondly remembered for the extraordinary life he led, according to his family. Powell, who passed away at 71 in Charlottetown, N.L., was hailed by his niece, Liberal MHA Lisa Dempster, as an exceptional individual who left a lasting impact.

Dempster highlighted Powell’s diverse career, which began as a fishing guide at 17 and later transitioned into a successful 50-year tenure as a pilot, amassing over 27,000 hours of flight time on 30 aircraft. She emphasized his pivotal role in numerous medical evacuations and search and rescue missions.

In his book “Against the Wind,” published in 2020, Powell chronicled his adventures, including surviving a plane crash in the Labrador wilderness. Despite facing challenges such as shipwrecks and a cancer diagnosis at 49, Powell demonstrated resilience and determination, eventually closing his airline company, Labrador Travel Air.

After a recent cancer recurrence, Powell passed away surrounded by loved ones, leaving behind a legacy of aviation excellence and unwavering perseverance. Labrador’s Philip Earle also expressed condolences, praising Powell as a true embodiment of the Labrador spirit, known for his aviation prowess, community involvement, and adventurous nature.

Powell’s presence in Labrador’s history of aviation and his impactful contributions have resonated deeply with those who knew him, marking his passing as a significant loss.
