Israeli authorities have apprehended 10 individuals linked to a series of settler attacks, including assaults on a foreign journalist and European diplomats in the occupied West Bank. The arrests follow heightened international criticism over the incidents, which occurred during the annual Palestinian olive harvest season.
Among the victims, Washington Post photographer Heidi Levine suffered severe injuries after being attacked by a group of young male settlers in Abu Falah village. She sustained broken ribs, vertebrae, underwent surgery for a nearly severed finger, and received stitches for stab wounds.
In a separate incident, masked settlers assaulted a group of European diplomats and visitors in the Christian village of Taybeh. Israeli police have initiated an investigation, with support from the Shin Bet security agency, border police, and the military.
The suspects were seized for questioning, with authorities also targeting individuals accused of violating military zone orders and engaging in illegal construction activities. Several vehicles and items linking the suspects to the alleged offenses were confiscated during the operation.
The surge in settler violence has raised concerns, with rights groups pointing out the lack of accountability for attacks on Palestinians. Reports indicate numerous assaults during the ongoing olive harvest season, resulting in injuries and damage to olive trees, a significant symbol of Palestinian heritage.
The attack on diplomats, which included representatives from Belgium, France, Poland, and Catholic officials, drew strong condemnation. Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot emphasized the need to end impunity for violent settlers.
Photographer Heidi Levine expressed disappointment at Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s response to the attacks but appreciated the support from President Isaac Herzog and former security officials. U.S. Ambassador Mike Huckabee denounced the assault as an act of terror by masked perpetrators, calling for stringent punishments.
As Netanyahu faces upcoming elections amid international criticism of settlement activities, his political rival Gadi Eisenkot condemned the violence, highlighting the erosion of Israel’s credibility. The settlements in the West Bank, deemed illegal by much of the international community, continue to be a contentious issue.
The arrests mark a significant development in addressing settler violence and its implications on the region’s stability and peace efforts.
