Arizona State University (ASU) has announced the departure of hockey coach Greg Powers following the incident involving Hamilton-born hockey player Matthew Mayich collapsing during a workout in August. ASU stated that a mutual agreement led to Powers leaving his position, with former NHL coach Dave Hakstol taking over.
Mayich, a St. Louis Blues draft pick, remains hospitalized in serious condition, according to his family’s lawyer. ASU’s initial review revealed that the incident occurred during a training session at the Tempe campus, noting that coaches did not submit a plan for review by trainers beforehand.
ASU has commissioned an independent review by former Supreme Court of Arizona Chief Justice Scott Bales in response to questions raised by Mayich’s family and lawyers. They have criticized the circumstances of the workout, alleging that it was conducted in excessive heat without adequate hydration for the players.
The family insists on a thorough investigation, urging full cooperation from all parties involved. They emphasize that Powers’ departure should not hinder the investigative process, and they call for the protection of players who have come forward. Seven teammates of Mayich have raised concerns about the handling of the incident and have requested a temporary replacement of the coaching staff during the investigation.
Powers, who had been ASU’s head coach since 2015, was placed on paid administrative leave and replaced by assistant coach Mike Corbett. ASU announced the hiring of Hakstol, a former NHL coach with experience from various teams, as the new head coach. Additionally, former NHL player Matt Greene and current assistant Jimmy Mullin were appointed as assistants to the team.
Mayich’s hockey background includes playing with the Hamilton Huskies and the Ottawa 67’s before being drafted by the St. Louis Blues.
