A 30-year-old individual named James Bryant has been indicted by a grand jury in Washington state for allegedly conspiring in the mass shooting that took place in Tumbler Ridge, B.C. The indictment, specifically for conspiracy to murder individuals in a foreign country, indicates that there is sufficient evidence for prosecutors to proceed with the case.
As per Emily Langlie, a representative for the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the issuance of the indictment last week means that a preliminary hearing initially set for October 20 will no longer take place. Bryant, who identifies with she/her pronouns and goes by the name Melody, was denied bail a day before the indictment was handed down on Wednesday.
According to a statement from the U.S. Department of Justice, the indictment outlines various actions taken by Bryant to advance the conspiracy behind the school shooting. The tragic incident in Tumbler Ridge in February resulted in the deaths of eight victims, including students and a teacher at a secondary school, at the hands of 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar.
The indictment against Bryant, a resident of Bellingham, Washington, alleges that she agreed to document the shooting and live stream it online, provided guidance to the shooter on target locations and weapon selection, and sent money to Van Rootselaar for the purchase of a lighter intended for use in an explosive device.
Conspiracy to commit murder in a foreign country, as stated by the Justice Department, carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment. It emphasizes that the accusations against Bryant are yet to be substantiated, and the case is being handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Todd Greenberg with support from the Justice Department’s National Security Division.
Tragically, Van Rootselaar took her own life at the school on February 10.
