Former NHL standout P.K. Subban is gearing up to feature in and oversee the production of an upcoming animated series based on the popular ‘Screech Owls’ franchise.
The collaboration between Shaftesbury, Sphere Animation, the NHL, and Boat Rocker Studios was officially revealed in a recent press release.
Scheduled for a fall 2027 debut on CBC and a winter 2028 premiere in French on Radio-Canada and TFO, ‘Screech Owls’ draws inspiration from Roy MacGregor’s book series and the 2001 live-action show of the same name. The storyline centers on a group of hockey players unraveling mysteries under the guidance of Coach P.K., emphasizing friendship and teamwork. Viewers can expect 26 episodes lasting 11 minutes each.
Hailing from Toronto, Subban enjoyed a successful career as a professional ice hockey defenseman, playing for the Montreal Canadiens, Nashville Predators, and New Jersey Devils from 2009 to 2022.
Discussing the project, Subban expressed, “A key aspect of my career has been finding innovative ways to expand the sport’s appeal and connect with young and diverse audiences. ‘Screech Owls,’ a series I cherished growing up, achieves both objectives.”
The show’s script will be penned by John May and Suzanne Bloch, the original creators of the live-action ‘Screech Owls.’ Additionally, Sarah Nurse, a prominent figure in the PWHL and Team Canada, will make a special appearance as herself in the series.
Marie McCann, the senior director of children’s content at CBC Kids, shared her excitement, stating, “This delightful series offers a perfect blend of friendship, teamwork, and sports in a heartwarming animated rendition of Canadian culture. Collaborating with P.K. Subban on this modern adaptation of beloved Canadian literature is a privilege that is sure to captivate a new generation of viewers with its intriguing mix of mysteries and hockey.”
