Nana Patekar, a renowned Indian actor and filmmaker, passed away on Thursday at his residence in the state of Goa at the age of 75. The cause of his death is believed to be a heart attack, according to a doctor at the hospital where he was declared deceased, as reported by the Press Trust of India.
Vishawanath Patekar, born in 1951 in Maharashtra, India, established a successful career in both Hindi and Marathi cinema that spanned almost five decades. Known for his powerful performances, Patekar often portrayed intricate and unconventional characters.
Patekar began his acting journey in the 1978 Hindi film “Gaman” and later garnered praise for his roles in “Parinda” and “Krantiveer.” His international recognition grew in 1988 with the Oscar-nominated film “Salaam Bombay!” directed by Mira Nair.
Throughout his career, Patekar received three National Film Awards, the highest film accolades in India, and was honored with the Padma Shri, one of the nation’s most prestigious civilian awards.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences over Patekar’s passing, commending the actor for his unique presence, intensity, and exceptional acting skills. Modi praised Patekar for his versatility and creativity in portraying characters that will be cherished for generations to come.
Nana Patekar is survived by his wife and a son.
