Former NHL defenseman Rich Pilon has found a passion for horse-driving that resonates with his love for hockey. Pilon, known for his career with the New York Islanders, New York Rangers, and St. Louis Blues in the 1980s and ’90s, ventured into leading horse-drawn wagon events in 2022 through his initiative, Horses & Hockey — Let’s Talk, dedicated to promoting children’s mental health.
In December 5, 2023, Pilon applied for a business license to operate in Saskatoon. Following a successful pilot project, the city’s transportation committee unanimously supported advancing to a city council vote on a regulatory framework allowing horse-drawn carriage rides within the city.
The rides, which have been featured at various events like Back to Batoche Days and Sikh community celebrations, cater to children and provide a unique experience. According to Pilon, he does not actively advertise due to his busy schedule.
The upcoming council vote, as per Jay Magus, Saskatoon’s transportation director, will establish a regulatory process for horse-drawn vehicle businesses in the city, ensuring safe operations. The proposed framework mandates a Class 5 driver’s license, adherence to traffic regulations, provision of adequate space for cyclists, and proper waste management.
Pilon emphasized the importance of avoiding busy streets for horse-driving in Saskatoon, aiming to provide a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants. While some Canadian cities have faced criticism over horse welfare concerns, Pilon reassured that his horses are well-cared for, limiting their work hours to three at most.
City staff’s report revealed six other western Canadian cities permitting horse-drawn vehicles, including Winnipeg, Regina, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, and Victoria. Pilon’s commitment to the welfare of his horses underscores his dedication to responsible and ethical horse-driving practices.
