“Nepal Halts Flood Search, Families in Anguish”

Following the catastrophic floods in Nepal that left thousands missing, families are expressing a range of emotions as the government announces the halt of search operations for victims.

On Monday, Prime Minister Balendra Shah’s office made the decision to end search and rescue efforts for individuals affected by the August 26 floods. The focus now shifts to rehabilitation and reconstruction tasks, such as repairing infrastructure like roads and bridges that were damaged, particularly in remote regions hindering aid distribution.

The current death toll stands at 1,455, with 5,285 individuals still unaccounted for, including numerous foreign nationals.

Global Affairs Canada recently reported 29 Canadians and permanent residents in Nepal and Tibet whose status following the floods remains uncertain. This number is subject to change as new information emerges. Efforts to obtain an update from the department are ongoing.

There were brief moments of hope when two Nepalese workers and a Chinese national were rescued from the Trishuli hydropower project tunnel on separate occasions.

Two individuals were rescued alive in Nepal, 10 days post the devastating floods, including a hydropower worker and a woman found in a damaged house. The search for over 5,000 missing persons continues.

Families of the missing have been staging protests and vigils, demanding enhanced search efforts.

Expressing frustration, Usha Khatri, who has been tirelessly searching for her husband, criticized the government for prematurely ending search operations. She emphasized the importance of holding onto hope for the missing individuals.
