A Toronto family is heartbroken after their cherished pet rabbit, Biscuit, disappeared at the annual Markham Fair. Both the family and fair officials suspect foul play, believing that Biscuit was stolen. Biscuit, a fluffy Holland Lop rabbit owned by Victoria McClelland’s family, vanished after winning first place at the fair last weekend.
McClelland expressed her devastation, stating that they had anticipated a joyful event and were shocked to receive news that their bunny might have been taken. The family eagerly anticipates the Markham Fair each year, and McClelland’s daughter was particularly thrilled to showcase Biscuit in the rabbit show.
After learning that Biscuit had clinched the top spot, the family was looking forward to retrieving him on Sunday. However, they received a distressing call informing them that Biscuit had disappeared from his cage. McClelland revealed that the entire family, especially her daughter, is devastated as Biscuit was not just a pet but a beloved part of their lives.
In a statement released on Sunday, the Markham and East York Agricultural Society expressed their disappointment over the incident, emphasizing that taking an animal that belonged to a 10-year-old girl from the fair was unacceptable. The society assured that they are investigating the matter and have contacted the authorities for assistance.
Fair organizers indicated that they suspect Biscuit was stolen as his cage was found closed from the outside when he went missing. Devin King, the president of Markham Fair, mentioned that they believe someone removed Biscuit from his enclosure on Saturday night, as the cage door was securely shut from the outside when discovered empty on Sunday morning.
Despite this being an unprecedented incident at the fair, King reiterated the importance of exhibitors’ contributions and emphasized the need for increased security measures to prevent such occurrences in the future. The fair has filed a police report, initiated social media campaigns to locate Biscuit, and plans to enhance security by installing additional surveillance cameras on-site.
York police confirmed that their property crime unit is actively investigating the matter. McClelland pleaded for Biscuit’s safe return, expressing the family’s desire to have their beloved pet back. Her daughter echoed the sentiment, emphasizing their longing for Biscuit’s safe return.
