“Canadian Armed Forces Members Arrested in Toronto”

The Canadian Armed Forces arrested two of its members, Sachintha Fernando and James Moreau, in Toronto on charges linked to organized crime, kidnapping, and firearms theft, as confirmed by the Department of National Defence. Both individuals, who are part of the 7 Toronto Regiment, have been relieved of their duties and are facing restricted access to military facilities and bases following their apprehension on Aug. 11. The Department did not disclose specific details regarding the accusations and directed inquiries to the Toronto police for additional information.

Fernando and Moreau, both bombardiers, are currently retained as armed forces personnel pending the outcome of an administrative evaluation. Fernando joined as a reservist in January 2020 but has not yet been on active duty, whereas Moreau enlisted as a reservist in March 2018 and was deployed in 2020 as part of Operation Laser amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The Canadian Press has sought comments from the Toronto police regarding the incident.
