Indian Captain’s Heroic Act Saves FlyDubai Flight

An Indian airline captain, who played a pivotal role in preventing a potential catastrophe on a FlyDubai flight, recounted his harrowing ordeal on Friday. Captain Smit Machchhar, currently recuperating in an Abu Dhabi hospital, shared with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi via a live television broadcast how he bravely battled for survival after being attacked by his co-pilot, leading to a sudden descent of the aircraft.

Despite sustaining multiple wounds and feeling incapacitated, Machchhar emphasized the urgency to rise to his feet to safeguard the lives of the passengers onboard. He emotionally narrated the intense struggle he faced, acknowledging the critical moment when he realized that the passengers’ safety depended on his ability to act promptly.

Hailing from Mumbai, India’s financial capital, Machchhar sustained severe injuries during the assault but exhibited remarkable courage by managing to unlock the cockpit door. This courageous act allowed passengers to intervene and subdue the assailant as the Boeing 737 rapidly descended, as confirmed by witnesses and Israeli authorities.

Machchhar’s heroic actions have garnered widespread acclaim, with global leaders commending his role in averting a potential disaster. Amid the chaos, the flight, carrying 182 individuals from Dubai to Tel Aviv, made an emergency landing in Tabuk, northwestern Saudi Arabia. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu disclosed that the attacker, an Omani national, was apprehended in Saudi Arabia and was undergoing interrogation, although the motive behind the attack remained unclear.

Reflecting on the distressing moments, Machchhar disclosed that he sought solace in reciting the Hanuman Chalisa, a Hindu hymn venerating Lord Hanuman and traditionally recited for fortitude and valor. Expressing gratitude for the divine strength he received, Machchhar credited Lord Hanuman for empowering him during the crisis.

With a professional background spanning approximately four years at FlyDubai and a prior stint of 11 years at SpiceJet, an Indian budget carrier, where he held senior roles, Machchhar has accumulated over 9,750 flying hours. Married and a father of two, Machchhar’s exemplary career trajectory underscores his experience and commitment to aviation safety.
