The Canadian women’s volleyball team will be focusing on their performance rather than Olympic qualification when they host the 2027 FIVB Women’s Volleyball World Cup in Montreal and Quebec City. This will mark the first time the tournament is held in North America, with matches also taking place in Omaha, Orlando, and Anaheim from August 20 to September 5, 2027.
Canada secured a spot in the 2028 Olympic indoor women’s volleyball event by winning the NORCECA Olympic continental qualifying tournament in the Dominican Republic on August 29. The 2027 World Cup serves as an Olympic qualifier, where the top three non-qualified countries will advance to the Olympics alongside the United States, Canada, and others already qualified. The remaining three spots will be determined by world rankings in 2028.
Brie Fransen, a player from Langley, B.C., expressed excitement about playing in the World Cup with the confidence of already securing an Olympic spot. Hosting the tournament will provide the team with home-court advantage and an opportunity to assess their performance and areas for improvement.
Montreal, Quebec City, Omaha, and Orlando will host pool and Round of 16 matches, with Anaheim hosting the quarterfinals, semifinals, and final at the Honda Center, the venue for the 2028 Olympic volleyball event. Volleyball Canada’s director of indoor events, Alan Ahac, described the event as a significant moment for volleyball in Canada, aiming to inspire the next generation of athletes ahead of the 2028 Olympic Games.
The Canadian women’s team, ranked eighth globally, previously played Nations League matches in Quebec City, garnering support from nearly 10,500 fans during the Canada-France match. The men’s team faced challenges in Olympic qualification, losing to Cuba in the continental final. Ranked 16th in the world, they will compete in the men’s World Cup in Poland next year, aiming to secure one of the three available Olympic berths through the tournament and world rankings.
