“Saskatchewan Mourns Loss of Long-Serving MLA Ken Krawetz”

Long-serving Saskatchewan Party MLA, cabinet minister, and former deputy premier Ken Krawetz passed away at the age of 75. Premier Scott Moe expressed his condolences to Krawetz’s family and shared the news on social media. Moe described Krawetz as a person who consistently brought logic, integrity, compassion, and common sense to decision-making in various roles throughout his career.

Initially elected as a Liberal in 1995, Krawetz later joined the Saskatchewan Party in 1997. He played a significant role in the party’s development, serving as both the opposition leader and interim party leader before Elwin Hermanson’s election in 1999. Known for his dedication to Saskatchewan, Krawetz held ministerial positions in finance and education.

Brad Wall, upon becoming the Sask. Party leader in 2004, appointed Krawetz as deputy leader. Wall paid tribute to Krawetz on social media, highlighting their close relationship and Krawetz’s mentorship. Krawetz was also recognized for his work in promoting Saskatchewan-Ukraine relations, receiving the prestigious Order of Prince Yarosav the Wise from then-Ukrainian President Victor Yushchenko in 2009.

In 2014, Krawetz announced his decision not to seek re-election in 2016 and subsequently left the cabinet in 2015. Premier Moe praised Krawetz’s unwavering dedication to Saskatchewan and the party, noting his strong family ties and passion for the Toronto Maple Leafs. As a mark of respect, flags at the legislature will be flown at half-mast in memory of Ken Krawetz.
