An unexpected find during a house renovation project in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, and a viral social media post have resulted in the reunion of a lost wallet with its owner after 51 years.
Carpenter Matty Goldsmith discovered a wallet while working on a renovation project on Victoria Road. The wallet, found beneath the old floors, contained various identification documents, including a driver’s license, student ID, a 1975 theater ticket for Hamlet, and a dollar bill. Goldsmith and his team were astonished to find everything intact and speculated that the wallet belonged to a former high school student who had worked at the site as a construction laborer.
Deciding to leverage the power of the internet, Goldsmith posted about the discovery online to track down the wallet’s owner. The post garnered swift responses from the community, including Richard Gilroy’s wife. Three days later, the wallet was returned to Gilroy.
Now 68 years old, Gilroy expressed his surprise and delight at getting his long-lost wallet back, mentioning his astonishment at finding his original handwritten birth certificate inside. Despite recalling when and where he lost the wallet, Gilroy’s memory of the wallet’s contents had faded over time.
Gilroy expressed gratitude towards Goldsmith and shared his plans to frame the items from the wallet for display.
