Three students lost their lives in a school shooting that occurred in the southern part of the Philippines on Friday. Among the casualties was a 16-year-old suspected gunman who ultimately turned the weapon on himself, according to provincial authorities. Additionally, eight individuals sustained injuries, with four in critical condition. The victims, all students aged between 14 and 17, were involved in the tragic incident in Banga town, South Cotabato.
Albert Palencia, the mayor of Banga, shared details about the shooter’s chilling announcement to his friends before the violent act. Palencia mentioned, “The suspect sat beside his friends and casually informed them to leave because he planned to carry out his intentions after lunch. Despite being known as a playful individual, his friends did not take his words seriously.” Tragically, after lunch, the shooter started firing at students, injuring 10 before taking his own life.
Governor Reynaldo Tamayo of South Cotabato emphasized the importance of ensuring that firearms are securely stored and inaccessible to minors. Tamayo stressed the need for gun owners to take responsibility in preventing minors from gaining access to weapons, as it is challenging for security personnel to monitor every student effectively.
This incident adds to a series of school shooting incidents in the Philippines, which were previously infrequent. In a recent event, a student live-streamed himself shooting and killing another student in a classroom in Zamboanga before committing suicide. Another tragic incident in June involved the loss of three students and injuries to around 20 others in an attack at a public high school in Tacloban, where two students opened fire on campus.
Despite the Philippines having strict regulations on gun ownership, including background checks and psychological evaluations, illegal firearms still circulate within the country.
