Last evening in Moncton, the Canadian men’s volleyball squad faced a tough defeat against the United States in the NORCECA championship final, which is a biennial event to determine the top team in North and Central America as well as the Caribbean. This marked Canada’s third consecutive silver medal at the competition.
Despite the setback, the Canadian men are setting their sights on a more significant goal. Alongside their runner-up finish in the NORCECA championship, they secured a spot in a separate tournament happening this Friday and Saturday in Moncton. The competition aims to determine a qualifier for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.
The upcoming four-team, single-elimination qualifier kicks off on Friday with Canada taking on Mexico at 3:30 p.m. ET, followed by Cuba facing the Dominican Republic at 6 p.m. ET. The winners will clash on Saturday at 6 p.m. ET for the coveted Olympic spot, with live coverage available on CBC Gem and the CBC Sports website.
The reigning NORCECA champions, the United States, ranked fourth globally, are not partaking in the Olympic qualifier as they have secured a direct entry to the Los Angeles Games as the host nation. The Canadian team, positioned 13th in the world rankings, appears to be the frontrunner for victory. With the advantage of playing on home turf, they hold the highest global ranking among the competing teams, with Cuba at 16th, Mexico at 23rd, and the Dominican Republic at 45th. Canada had previously triumphed over Mexico and Cuba in straight sets during the tournament’s earlier stages.
Following a challenging Nations League season earlier this year, where they finished second-to-last in the competition and were relegated, the Canadian team seems to have rebounded well. By securing a top-three finish at the NORCECA championship, they have also qualified for the Volleyball World Cup in Poland next year. Coach Dan Lewis commended his players for their relentless spirit and determination despite their recent setbacks.
On the women’s front, the Canadian team has reached an all-time high ranking of eighth globally. Their recent successes include a historic victory at the NORCECA championship and earning their first Olympic berth since 1996. The women’s team will also be competing in next year’s women’s World Cup, which they are co-hosting with the United States.
While Canada’s volleyball teams have faced challenges at the Olympics in the past, with limited success, the current momentum suggests a positive trajectory.
