Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized the need for a stronger partnership between Canada and Europe to safeguard smaller nations’ sovereignty against the influence of major powers. In a speech to the European Parliament, Carney advocated for an “alliance of the future” between Canada and the 27 European Union countries, aiming to uphold shared values and provide a protective environment for citizens to flourish.
Highlighting the importance of sovereignty and resilience in the face of challenges, Carney underscored the significance of the proposed alliance. Amid Canada’s trade tensions with the United States, Carney subtly referenced U.S. President Donald Trump’s strategies, suggesting that Europe could offer a more reliable partnership based on common values and mutual support.
Over recent months, Canada has solidified its ties with the EU through various partnership agreements. Notably, Canada became the first non-European country to join Security Action for Europe (SAFE), which offers substantial defense funding. Carney’s speech aligns with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s vision of enhancing the Canada-Europe relationship beyond conventional trade agreements.
Despite discussions around Canada potentially becoming an “associate member” of the EU, Carney and his team have downplayed the idea of full EU membership. Emphasizing the importance of a strategic alliance rather than formal membership, Carney advocated for deep collaboration across various strategic capabilities to ensure mutual autonomy.
Following a meeting with von der Leyen, Carney and the EU chief explored opportunities to deepen cooperation in critical sectors such as minerals, AI, defense, energy, and finance. The focus remains on driving tangible results and strengthening the partnership between Canada and Europe for long-term success and resilience.
