The 2029 World Athletics Championships will make history by being held in Nairobi, Kenya, marking the first time the event will take place in Africa. This decision was announced by World Athletics President Sebastian Coe following the Ultimate Championship in Hungary. Coe emphasized the significance of bringing the championships to Kenya, a country with a rich tradition in distance running.
Kenya’s selection as the host for the 2029 edition underscores its reputation as a track powerhouse, despite facing scrutiny over past doping incidents involving elite Kenyan runners. Notably, marathon world record holder Ruth Chepng’etich is currently serving a three-year ban for doping violations.
In 2031, the championships will return to Germany, with Munich set to host the prestigious event. Unlike the recent Ultimate Championship, which featured a select group of top athletes competing for cash prizes, the traditional World Championships will offer a comprehensive program spanning 10 days and featuring a wide range of track and field events, including disciplines like the men’s triple jump, shot put, walks, and marathon.
