Participants, both American and Canadian, provide samples and data to track the toxins’ influence. While the study is still in its early stages, researchers have already noted varying individual responses to the toxins.

Algae toxins can become aerosolized and travel through the air, potentially affecting coastal communities beyond Lake Erie. Gregory Dick, from the University of Michigan, underscores the importance of studying the long-term effects of inhaling these toxins, emphasizing the potential respiratory risks associated with airborne exposure.

Andrew Ault, a chemistry professor at the University of Michigan, highlights the sensitivity of lungs to airborne toxins compared to ingested ones. The study also explores how the topography around Lake Erie impacts the spread of airborne algae and emphasizes the challenges in controlling air pollution compared to water contamination.

Ultimately, the research aims to provide communities with valuable insights into managing the risks of airborne algae exposure, potentially guiding public health measures to mitigate these environmental hazards.
